Your dentist, Dr. Jeremy D. Hatch, wants you to have the best dental experience possible. This is why he does all he can do to make you comfortable and relaxed in the dental chair. One of the ways he does this is by using anesthesia. To explain a little more, our dental team is happy to give you the details about the different types of anesthesia available.
The first type is local anesthesia. There are two different stages to this anesthesia: a topical anesthetic and an injectable anesthetic. The topical anesthetic is just a gel that is applied to the area with a cotton swab. After a few minutes, our dental team will test your nerves to see if you can feel anything. Then, once you’re numb, we will provide the injectable anesthetic that is like a little shot, but you won’t feel a thing. This anesthetic will block the nerves that transmit and sense pain. It will also numb the mouth. So, when you treat your teeth with dental fillings and dental crowns or even treat gum disease, you won’t feel any sensation.
The second type is general anesthesia. This is typically used in more complex treatments and when patients suffer dental anxiety. This anesthesia can help induce the loss of feeling and also reduce consciousness.
